Carer Services

ARE YOU A CARER?

“A carer is someone who, without payment, provides support to a partner, child, relative, friend or neighbour who could not manage without their help.”

Here at Great Staughton Surgery we want to offer extra support to all of our patients who help to look after a relative, friend or neighbour who is ill or disabled.  There is a special area of the notice board in Reception that has advice aimed at carers and there are also leaflets next to it that may be of interest.

We are not talking about paid carers but people who give up their time willingly to do what they can for a loved one.  It has been noticed that carers often neglect their own health whilst they are looking after somebody else, so we will do everything we can to offer you appointments that fit in with your caring role.  We can also put you in touch with other organisations which may be able to help.

In order to help us do this we need to know who you are.  So next time you are in the surgery just give your name to one of our Receptionists and they will put you in touch with either Claire or Ros who will have an informal chat with you to find out your concerns and how we may be able to help.

You can also have a formal assessment undertaken by experts outside the surgery.  This is a great opportunity to reflect on your caring role and be signposted for support and information relevant to you as an individual.

Other Services

Counsellor
Paula Williams offers counselling sessions on Friday mornings. If you feel you would benefit from counselling you need to make an appointment with a Doctor first who will then refer you on to Paula for up to six confidential sessions.
She can also see patients privately for longer term counselling.

Primary Care Mental Health Team
This team consists of a Liasion mental health worker and a graduate psychologist and extends the skills we have from the counsellor. If you have had a problem with depression, breavement or anxiety then they may be able to help. Contact your GP for a referral to the team.

Chiropody
Sue Walker is available at the surgery premises on Friday afternoons for private consultation. Book appointments at reception.
Some patients will qualify for NHS Chiropody and the necessary referral will need to be made by the doctor or Nurse Practitioner.

Non-NHS Services
Medical examinations for insurance, driving, employment or other purposes are carried out by appointment. Doctors will also sign BUPA/PPA forms and private certificates. There is a charge payable by the patient for most of these services, as the NHS does not cover them.
The fees are as recommended by the British Medical Association.

Dispensing and Non-Dispensing patients

If you are a "Dispensing patient" this means that you live more than a mile from your nearest chemist and you can collect your medicines from the surgery. "Non-dispensing" patients are those who live within one mile of their nearest chemist and we unable to dispense medication except in an emergency - this means that we will issue a paper prescription for you to collect your medicines from a chemist of your choice.

If you are a non-dispensing patient there are several options:

  • You can collect your paper prescription direct from our dispensary
  • You can send us a stamped addressed envelope and we can post you the prescription. Obviously this is reliant on the postal service which is beyond our control.
  • We have a courtesy service with The Old Swan Pharmacy in Kimbolton - we send prescriptions to them so you could have your medication dispensed by them if you wish. if you would like us to do this, please mark clearly to this effect each time you send us your repeat request.
  • We can also arrange for your prescription to go to Boots the Chemist in St Neots, Tesco's in St Neots, or Lloyds Pharmacy at Eaton Socon Health Centre. Please ask one of the dispensers for details.
  • If you live in Little Paxton or Buckden, you can take your repeat slip to the pharmacy there and they will forward them to us to dispense ready for you to collect. This takes longer than our usual 48 hour service.

Please remember to state clearly where you would like your prescription sent each time you forward your repeat request. We have a lot of patients and we cannot remember everyone's request.

Over-the-counter medicines

We also stock a selection of items of medication for sale without a prescription. These include popular brands for minor complaints such as pain relief, cough & cold medicines, teething gel and eye drops. Please see the display in the surgery or ask a dispenser for details.
